Asheville, NC Area Missions
Asheville, NC area missions in 2010 offers the opportunity to serve Christ while serving others in several ways. Groups often choose Asheville as their mission destination because of the diversity of opportunities. Groups may choose to do something different each day or some combination for the week. We will be working in Asheville the weeks of June 9-12 (a short week), July 11-16, July 18-23, August 8-13.

Home Repair Ministry
The Timothy Project coordinates home repairs and construction, as well as yard and home clean up and general assistance. We visit each home and talk with the residents in determining needs. In many cases, those individuals are isolated from family and resources and a loving, Christian presence is a blessing to them, in addition to the work performed. Groups are divided into teams, with the group’s adult chaperones in charge, and are assigned tasks according to skill level and interests.

Homeless Ministry
Through our ongoing support of the grassroots ministries of the Asheville/Buncombe Community Christian Ministry, the Meals on Wheels, Council on Aging, The Salvation Army and First Baptist Church’s Crossroads Ministry, the Timothy Project seeks to bring hope to homeless and displaced persons. ABCCM runs one of the largest and most comprehensive facilities of its type in the nation with the Restoration Quarters and Inn, a mission for homeless veterans of US armed forces. Women and children find sanctuary and a fresh start at the Steadfast House. Groups assist both shelters and ministries in numerous ways, depending on the current needs.

VBS Ministry
In hosting Vacation Bible Schools, Timothy Project groups have shared the reality of a loving God to children in difficult circumstances. At low income housing projects, church groups have been welcomed and allowed to share the gospel through all the typical VBS activities. Groups have brought with them materials from VBS in their own churches and thought it to be a good use of resources. For a relatively small population base, the Asheville area has a cultural mix of peoples—with many children from Russia and the Ukraine, in addition to white, Hispanic, African American and Native American children. Watching the children participate together in VBS reminds us that “Jesus loves the little children of the world”.

Environmental Stewardship
In 2008, The Timothy Project initiated an emphasis in Environmental Stewardship. This encourages youth to be mindful of caring for God’s creation in the natural world. The reality of finite natural resources is further impetus for our efforts. Through education and hands on experience, youth are exposed to the issues and solutions of the day. The Timothy Project is pleased to associate with those providing leadership in this area including: Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway, RiverLink, Nantahala Outdoor Center and Quality Forward.

Overview
Mission weeks include times of work, fun, reflection and connection. While the focus is on missions, we also have some time together for an hour in the evenings for fun and devotionals. We also build in an evening of BBQ and Bluegrass music (a little mountain culture) and the last night is spent at the local amusement park, Fun Depot. Lodging is at The Ramada Inn, which provides clean, comfortable space for us at a low cost and has a pool, meeting room, basketball, volleyball and a convenient location.

This project is appropriate for middle school, high school and college groups. Groups should be a minimum of 10 persons with 2 chaperones or more per 10 students. College groups ratios may vary.
