Charleston, South Carolina Area Missions
The stately waterside homes of the Battery may seem a
world away from the poverty of an inner city
neighborhood. In reality, we are all connected in our
increasingly shrinking world. The Timothy Project, in
conjunction with Metanoia, will be hosting two mission
weeks for 2010 in North Charleston, SC. The weeks are
July 24-30 and July 31-August 6. Recognizing that true
change can occur only when the people of the community
feel empowered, Metanoia identifies and recognizes young
leaders and encourages them to learn and make a
difference in their own community. The asset based
community development model is helpful in defining an
approach to missions that is relationship focused,
encouraging long term connections and respect for those
to whom service is shared. The Timothy Project also
connects with other organizations that work in the
poorer neighborhoods, including Tri-County Family
Ministries and the Noisette Foundation. We have also
worked in schools and a home for girls. Our home base
for the week is St Matthew Baptist Church, a
predominately African American church in the heart of
North Charleston. We arrive for our mission weeks on
Saturday, in order that we might worship with St Matthew
on Sunday morning.

Overview, Activities and More
The work for our week will be primarily home repairs and
construction, painting and the like. We will also have
some opportunities for participants to work in a food
bank and clothing ministry. It is anticipated there will
also be some opportunity to connect with children in the
area in the form of a day or more camp. This is more
likely the second week. Groups are divided into teams of
8-12 persons and group leaders are responsible for the
supervision of each team. The Timothy Project
coordinates all work and activities but does not
supervise your work site. The evenings will have some
planned activities, music and devotionals as well as
free time. There will also be time at the beach,
including a cookout! The lodging is at the Best Western
Downtown Charleston.

fortunate to offer such good accommodations for the week
for the second consecutive year. Charleston is a well
known historic, cultural and recreational destination.
On your free night, there are many places to explore.
Some groups wish to stay an additional night for
sightseeing and we can make those arrangements for you.
